Abacus: My System Controller is not connecting to the network. What should I do to find out the problem?

Answer

There are 3 steps one might want to try:

1.  Connect the SC to a Laptop / server with hyper terminal.  Be sure the connection is made to the console connector (which is different from the LAN port). The setting of the hyper terminal should be something like this:

Speed: 115200
Data bit: 8
Parity: N
Stop bit: 1

After you open the terminal, power cycle the Abacus.  You will see the boot up process.  At this time, you can interrupt the process by hitting a key, and check on the IP address settings.  You can also change the IP address here.

If the card does not boot up, then there is a possibility of hardware problem on the card.

2.     If the boot up process is O.K. and the IP address / network mask / GW address are O.K., then connect directly a Laptop to the SC.  You should be able to ping the SC from the Laptop.  If you want, you can also run Abacus software with the system now.

 3.       If (2) is O.K., then you can connect the SC LAN to the network.  Make sure that the switchport is configured as auto-configuration.  If not, you will see disconnect from time to time due to possibly contention.
