Objective/Summary

This article describes how to configure Spirent TestCenter DHCP server to work with a DUT that is the DHCP relay agent

Environment/Versions
  • Spirent TestCenter
  • DHCP server
Procedure
  • The attached document outlines the steps needed to configure Spirent TestCenter DHCP emulation to work with a DUT that is the DHCP relay agent.
  • Also attached is a Spirent TestCenter 3.70 configuration file used in the example.
  • Also attached is a Spirent TestCenter DHCP Server configuration when it is not on the same subnet as the DHCP Relay Agent

Basic Steps

  1. Go to Settings->DHCPv4 tab and check the "Use Gateway when sending DHCPv4 messages to Relay Agents" box.
  2. Next go to Devices->DHCP Server and select "Edit Relay Agent Address Pools" and enter the relay agent IP address into the Router List column.
Notes
  • The DHCP Servers do not have to be on the same subnet as the Relay Agent
    • simply configure the gateway address to be that of the Relay Agent
    • ARP will need to be performed from the DHCP Servers so that the DUT will have the MAC addresses in its Table
  • Sample Relay Agent behavior
    • Reference topology diagram along with key fields found in STC, Wireshark, the DHCP RFC, and the Cisco (an old Cisco 7200 router) configuration.
    • Messages from the Reference Topology as seen through pcaps
