Avalanche: Multiple instances of Avalanche Commander GUI on a single PC - Fatal Error Avalanche cannot be started as there is other ABL instance running

  • Avalanche 4.00 - 4.15 only supported running a single instance of commander per PC.
  • Offical support for multiple instances of the Avalanche Commander GUI was added as of 4.20 [reference ER#340740297/ER#335328220]
  • Although it was also possible to open two or more instances of the Commander GUI in the 2.xx and 3.xx versions this has not been tested and is not recommended as it may lead to unexpected behavior.
  • In Avalanche 4.0x and 4.1x attempting to open a second GUI will throw the following pop up error:
    • Fatal Error
      Avalanche cannot be started as there is other ABL instance running. Probably you have a TCL scripts running. Please wait for then to finish before starting Avalanche Commander.
  • To resolve this error you may need to Open windows Task Manager and kill all javaw.exe processes along with tlcsh before re-opening a single instance of the GUI again.
