Positioning Application, SimCHAN: The software reports "Error: Cannot arm scenario", "Error:... problems with the signal generator hardware", "Error:... unit is not licenced for this PC"

Environment/Versions
  • PosApp (SimGEN / SimREPLAYplus / SimREPLAY)
  • SimCHAN v3-02 or later
Answer
  • After trying to start the scenario the following sequence of error messages are displayed (and/or written to the Message Log file)
    • Note that the serial number given in Figure 3 is an example only and will change based on the system in use

  • This is caused by a missing or incorrect "Hardware Key" for the Auxlliary unit(s) connected in the system
    • If you are using a version of SimGEN / SimREPLAYplus / SimREPLAY before v2-90, see Note 2 below

  • To resolve the error follow these steps:-
  1. Exit the software
  2. Go to the software root directory
        - For PosApp = C:\Program Files\Spirent Communications\Positioning Application
        - For SimCHAN = C:\Program Files\Spirent Communications\SimCHAN
  3. Locate the utility = "hardware_keys_utility.exe"
  4. Launch the utility
  5. Use the "Customer Specific Files" CD, supplied with the original shipment, to
        - Check that any entered keys match the ones for your Auxillary units
        - Add keys that are missing
  6. If you cannot locate the "Customer Specific Files" CD or the problem still occurs when you enter keys provided on the CD, please refer to the information below to contact Spirent Global Services

NOTES

  1. Hardware Keys are installed by Spirent at the time of configuring the host PC controller (if Spirent provide the PC). The main reaons why keys will be missing are:-
        - Spirent did not provide the host PC and the user has overlooked this requirement during their own set-up procedure
        - A replacement or additional PC has been configured for use with the simulators and the keys have not been entered during that procedure
        - New Auxilliary units have been provided for integration with an existing Master unit and keys have not been entered on to the original host PC controller
  2. Before PosApp v2-90 Hardware Keys were also used for the Master unit too. Users with these earlier software versions will need to ensure they have keys for all simulators.
  3. From PosApp v2-90 and SimCHAN v3-00 a the licence file, "lservrc.txt", authenticates the software to work with the Master simulator.
        - When just one simulator is used the licence file is all you need.
        - When there are two or more simulators in the system, the licence file authenticates the Master and the Hardware Key(s) authenticate the Auxillary unit(s)
