Positioning Application: What is the PosApp_engine.exe ?
Environment/Versions
PosApp (SimGEN / SimREPLAYplus / SimREPLAY)
Answer
From PosApp (SimGEN / SimREPLAYplus / SimREPLAY) v4-00 onwards Spirent introduced a new architecture to the software
There are two elements known as the "Engine" and the "GUI"
When you double-click the "PosApp.exe" or the standard PosApp shortcut (installed to the desktop by default) then this launches the "GUI"
The GUI then automatically initiates the "Engine" in the background.
The two elements are connected using a 'local' Ethernet socket.
Running together they provide the 'normal' operation of PosApp and the experience for the user is very much seamless with previous versions of the software.
The "Engine" can be run independently from the "GUI" by double-clicking the "PosApp_engine.exe" (installed in the PosApp directory).
This opens a DOS window and certain messages are written to screen in response with to status/progress of the "Engine".
Under normal circumstances running the "Engine" separately has no advantage and so is not advised in any way.
However, it can sometimes help to diagnose certain unexpected behaviour by assessing the information written to the "Engine" window.
This same information is written to a "PosApp_engine_message_log.txt" file too
