Spirent TestCenter: Why is Downlink traffic being sent to all Eth ports?

Environment/Versions
  • Spirent TestCenter.
  • WiFi.
  • One emulated device on a WiFi port and three on the Ethernet ports (one client per port).
  • Three downlink stream blocks.  One from each LAN device to the WiFi device.
  • Manual IP addressing on Spirent TestCenter emulated devices.  No DHCP.
Answer
  • After some minutes of running the traffic, it will start flooding through the Eth ports.  This could be happening because the ARP cache (MAC address table) on the AP is timing out and so the traffic begins to flood.
  • Probably the DUT is doing L2 switching. So, if uplink traffic is sent, then the MAC address table will not time out any ARP entries and so we won’t see this occur.
  • The problem is not reproducible with DHCP enabled on the Spirent TestCenter devices, probably because, when we enable DHCP the DUT is L3 routing.
