Spirent TestCenter: What is the difference between the Capture Engine Modes?

Environment/Versions
  • Spirent TestCenter.
  • Packet Capture.
Answer
Regular Mode: Capture the entire Ethernet frame. Default mode.
Signature Mode: Capture only the signature tags in 16-byte frames.
IEEE 802.11 Sniffer Mode (Dedicated Radio): Captures all traffic received from the wireless network.
IEEE 802.11 Regular Mode (Shared Radio): Capture frames which have IEEE 802.11 header.

Capture IEEE 802.11 Regular Mode is similar to IEEE 802.11 Sniffer Mode, with these exceptions:
  • A dedicated port is not required for capture.
  • It does not capture Acknowledge frames (IEEE 802.11 Sniffer mode does.).
  • IEEE 802.11 OFDMA Mode - analyze background OFDMA sessions or capture HE MU for a specified AID.
TIPS:
  • When you select IEEE 802.11 Sniffer Mode or IEEE 802.11 Regular Mode, the IEEE 802.11 capture tab appears next to the General tab. Use the controls on that tab to set Channel Width and select a Channel.
  • When you select IEEE 802.11 OFDMA Mode, the IEEE 802.11 capture tab appears next to the General tab. Use the controls on that tab to set the Sniffer Mode and specify the AID and BSSID.
  • The IEEE 802.11 General port configuration tab is disabled when you select an IEEE 802.11 capture mode. Complete your port configuration before you enable IEEE 802.11 capture.
  • Select either IEEE 802.11 Sniffer Mode or IEEE 802.11 Regular Mode to enable IEEE 802.11 Frame Filter Mode, and expose the Frame Filter configuration tab.
  • N/A appears after an IEEE 802.11 mode name when you are not connected to an IEEE 802.11 port.
